"Neuville Frères Facteurs-d" Orgues / à Rexpoede (Nord)". Thanks to the kindness of the Providential of the Order of the Redemptorists, Father Fernando Ortega, we have been able to have exact news about the date of construction, inauguration and transfer of the instrument. This information has been extracted from the "Crónica de la Casa". The organ was built by the Neuville house in 1897 and arrived in Santiago in April 1898. bound for the old Ugarte Chapel, of the Redemptorist Fathers, Located on San Alfonso Street. Due to the weight of the instrument, made up of more than a thousand pieces, the engineer Don Lorenzo Madsen had to reinforce the upper choir of the aforementioned chapel with several columns. He set up the organ of Father Francisco Javier Weiss, Redemptorist, specialist in that work, who began his complex work on May 21, 1899 and he completed it in the record time of 15 days, with the help of several theology students of the order. Shortly after, the organ was inaugurated by the organist of the cathedral of Santiago, who stated that it was the "purest and most pleasant" sound instrument in the city. Twenty years later, in 1918, Father Weiss himself disassembled the organ and reassembled it in the tribune of the new temple, the current Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. |
