Catedral de Valdivia

When I was first in the United States (1970) I was assistant organist of my Professor Jerry Brainard (Harpsichord) at St. John's Methodist Church in Lubbock, Texas.

In 1994, my organ teacher, Dr. Wayne Hobbs, informed me that the Hofmann instrument that I played in those years had been replaced by a new Holtkamp organ, and that the Hofmannn was for sale.

I informed Father Grabriel Guarda O.S.B., who had commissioned me to find an instrument for the Cathedral of Valdivia, the opportunity that presented itself, and the steps were taken to to acquire it for the new church, then under construction.

Unfortunately, the advice I gave on that occasion to place the organ on the side was not followed. East of the Church, since in the current location the morning sun reaches directly to the instrument through the window on the north side, right in front of the organ.

They promised to install curtains to protect it, but unfortunately that initiative has not prospered (July 2005).

The assembly of the electro/mechanical controls of the Hofmann organ of the new cathedral of Valdivia was carried out by Dr Carlos Lauterbach Rotach.
