Angelo Morettini (1799‑1877)
[from Wikipedia]
The Morettini were a family of organ builders or organ builders from Perugia whose activity
It extended throughout the 19th century.
There were three Morettini: Angelo, Nicola and Francesco.
All or almost all of Morettini's organs continue to function today.
The founder Angelo Morettini was born in Perugia in 1799 into a poor family,
But from a very young age he showed a special interest in mechanics.
In 1819 he was sent by his father to the workshop of the Marche organ builder Sebastiano Vici of Montecarotto.
He built several organs with his teacher, but the first organs signed by him come from his laboratory
of Perugia inaugurated in 1823, in which, that same year, its first organ was born, located in the church of San
Nicolò to Cantiano, who remained one of his best examples. After achieving fame,
In just over fifty years he built more than 200 organs, present in greater numbers in Umbria, Marche and Lazio.
His son Nicola worked by his side in recent times.
In 1877 father and son carried out the most important and laborious work:
the construction of the organ for the Church of San Agustín in Santiago de Chile.
This carefully dismantled organ was sent to Civitavecchia on a merchant ship.
A few days after this great commission, Angelo Morettini died, leaving the legacy of a tradition that would last until the 1930s.
